There’s something about summer in Richmond, Virginia that feels a little more magical.
The days are longer, the sun stays warm well into the evening, and kids seem to live in a world of play. This summer, I had the joy of photographing The Summer Bubble Minis, and they became one of my favorite offerings yet. What started as a simple idea — bubbles and sunshine — turned into something so much bigger. These sessions gave me a chance to return to what first drew me to family photography: playing with kids and capturing who they really are.
Before I launched M.Photo here in Richmond, VA, I worked at a daycare. I’ve always loved connecting with kids, seeing what excites them, hearing what they’re proud to share, and watching them light up when they feel seen. That’s why these family photo sessions felt so special
The bubbles were just the icebreaker. What really unfolded during these minis were moments of kids being free, silly, curious, and completely themselves. Those authentic smiles and little bursts of joy don’t happen by asking, “Okay, sit right here and say cheese.” Instead, they come from playing, asking questions, sharing stories, and meeting kids where they are. The photos from these sessions — the laughter, the movement, the sparkle of sunlight through bubbles — remind me that the best images are often the ones we don’t plan. They’re the ones that happen when kids feel comfortable enough to just be themselves.
As the summer winds down, I’m feeling so grateful for every family who came out for a Bubble Mini. These photos will always remind me of the warmth of summer, the sound of giggles, and the joy of childhood. If you missed this round of minis, don’t worry — there will be more opportunities ahead. Until then, I’ll be holding onto this little bit of sunshine.
