Fall family photos can feel stressful — I get it.
The pressure to fit it in before the holidays. The rush to make the most of that 30-minute session. The feeling that you need to hurry up and smile because your photographer has six other shoots that day and you don’t want to waste their time. It’s hard to leave the baggage of the day behind and step in front of the camera, smiling like nothing’s on your mind. For many families, photo sessions can feel like just another item to check off the list. But here’s the mindset shift I’d love for you to consider: instead of seeing your family photos as something you have to do — see them as something you get to do.
You get to take a break from the chaos of everyday life.
You get to slow down and spend a little time simply being together.
You get to capture your family as you truly are — the laughter, the quirks, the little expressions that make your people yours.
Because your kids really are the smartest, funniest, and most wonderful humans you know — and your session is a chance to celebrate that.
Sure, we can always get the “everyone standing together, smiling at the camera” shot. It’s classic and important. But the truly great photos — the ones that make you feel something — come when everyone enters a state of play. And that only happens when everyone feels comfortable.
I’m not a teacher (though kids sometimes think of me like one), and I’m not their parent either. Kids don’t have to do everything I say — though it’s helpful when they listen! My goal isn’t to keep everyone in line; it’s to capture who your kids really are. Being a little loose and not overly strict helps me do that — it gives space for their genuine personalities to shine through.
One of my favorite parts of this job is being silly with the kids — talking to them, figuring out what makes them laugh, and discovering their sense of humor. Before photography, I worked at a daycare, and that part of the job — the play, never felt like work. I miss it sometimes, and I love that photography gives me that opportunity again.
When kids feel like they have a little control, magic happens, again photo sessions can play by different rules. If your child doesn’t want to stand in the wet grass — no problem! We’ll pivot. Offering small choices or “controlled ultimatums” helps kids feel respected and heard, which usually leads to more cooperation… and better photos. And I know it’s not always easy to stay cool when you can’t quite find the solution to your kid’s frustration in the moment. You’re trying to keep the peace, the clock is ticking, and it’s easy to feel that rising sense of panic. But that’s completely normal — truly. The best thing you can do is take a breath, step back, and let me help guide things along. I’ve seen every version of a family session, and we can always find a way to bring everyone back together. This approach works for toddlers, teens, and yes — even adults. Because it’s not just kids who struggle to relax in front of the camera. I feel it too!
The key is that we all loosen our grip a little. When I, as your photographer, relinquish some control… and you, as parents, smile and decompress… your kids notice. Everyone’s energy shifts. That’s when the genuine smiles, laughter, and connection start to unfold naturally.
Family photos don’t have to be another source of stress. They can be an opportunity — a pause in your week to reconnect, play, and capture the beauty of your family as it is right now.
Because when we let go of perfection, we make room for what’s real — and that’s where the best photos live.
